国際言語文化学科からのお知らせ

Department of International Studies in Language and Culture, Department of Japanese Traditional Culture, and the Tea Ceremony Circle cooperated in holding a big cultural exchange event on Saturday, July 17: a Welcome and Cultural Exchange Day for the Friendship Delegation from Tyler, Texas, USA.
（7月17日（土）にアメリカ・テキサス州タイラー市から姉妹都市の八千代市を訪問中の親善訪問団が同市内にある東京成徳大学に来学しました。国際言語文化学科、日本伝統文化学科、茶道サークルのメンバーが中心となり、歓迎交流会を開催しました。）

Twenty-five visitors, led by Mayor Barbara Bass and delegation head, Henry Bell, came to TSU in the afternoon. Tyler, Texas has a sister-city relationship with Yachiyo City where Tokyo Seitoku University has a campus. Every four years a delegation visits Yachiyo from Tyler. Many members of the Yachiyo International Association also joined us for this day.　 Dr. Kokubu, vice-president of the university, gave the opening message for our event.
（バーバラ・バス、タイラー市長ならびに訪問団長のヘンリー・ベル氏ら25名を迎えました。四年ごとにタイラー市から八千代市を訪問することになっており、八千代市国際交流協会からも多くのメンバーの参加がありました。国分康孝副学長による冒頭の挨拶で交流会が始まりました。）

The students of the Traditional Culture Department, directed by Professor Aoyagi, planned several demonstrations of traditional Japanese arts, starting with a demonstration on the tea ceremony by Professor Fumiko Naoi, aided by the members of the Tea Ceremony Circle. This was followed up by a demonstration of the forms used for Japanese archery and then a hands-on demonstration of the ancient court style of dress, the ju-ni hitoe. Margaret Otake, associate professor in the International Studies Department provided the interpretation into English.
（日本伝統文化学科の青柳隆志教授と学生が中心となり、日本の伝統文化について紹介が行われ、茶道サークルの顧問である直井文子准教授が茶道のデモンストレーションがありました。また弓道、十二単なども体験しました。これらの通訳は国際言語文化学科の應武マーガレット准教授が行いました。）

Following greetings and remarks from representatives of Tyler　and representatives of the Yachiyo-Tyler Friendship Association and Yachiyo International Association, the participants joined in a get-acquainted game. Several International Studies students helped in the translation and interpretation for this game. By this point, there was a lot of talk and laughter occurring among the participants.
（両市の関係者や代表による挨拶に続いて、国際言語文化学科の学生が通訳を行いつつ、ゲームなどをして親睦を深めました。参加者間では話し込んだり、笑い声があがるなど、大変盛り上がりました。）

The day’s final activity was hands-on participation in playing traditional Japanese children’s games: menko, kendama, origami, ayatori, darumaotoshi, and koma. The Traditional Culture students prepared the games and the explanations in Japanese and the International Studies students explained in English or with gestures how to play.
（交流会の最後に、日本の伝統的な子供の遊びである、メンコ、剣玉、折り紙、あやとり、ダルマ落とし、独楽などについて伝統文化学科の学生が日本語で遊び方を説明し、国際言語文化学科の学生が英語で通訳をするという形で楽しみながらやり取りがなされました。）

From all accounts, the day was a great success: our American visitors had a chance to learn more about Japanese traditional culture and get acquainted with present-day Japanese college students. The students had an opportunity to put the fruits of their studies to practical use and to have an international encounter right here on campus.
（訪問団の方々は日本の伝統文化や現在の日本の大学生との交流により、日本に対する理解が深まったと同時に、迎えた本学の学生も英語を使う機会が得られたばかりでなく、国際交流もキャンパスに居ながらにして楽しむことができました。）

TSU looks forward to hosting another culture day in the future when another Tyler delegation visits Yachiyo.
