Students in this Conversation class learn not to be afraid of making a mistake in English. They learn to speak up and to take the initiative when they don’t understand. From the very first class students are taught to actively use phrases such as: “What does _______mean? ” or “Could you repeat that?” By learning to look at and listen for models of useful phrases and sentences, students learn to stop trying to translate from Japanese and instead to insert their own information into the models. This helps students be able to express themselves more quickly and successfully. Students learn to think of, and then ask, questions of their classmates. By the end of the course, students are able to use the English they have learned in junior and senior high school to communicate their own ideas and preferences about daily life: fashion, stories about past events, likes and dislikes, and so on.
