専門科目紹介「Introduction to Global Studies」Californian Accent and Culture

This lesson was taught in the omnibus class called "Introduction to Global Studies". The content and purpose of this lecture was to teach students about the culture and accent of California. Students were introduced to the history, culture, language, and interesting facts about California.

People often think about surfing or beaches when they think about California, so it is important to explore these aspects of life in California. In fact, surfing has a huge impact on not only the life of Californians, it also influences its language heavily. For instance, the word “dude”, which is commonly used between surfers, is now often used by everyone. Since California has such a large area, there are also regional differences between the North and the South of the state. Northern Californians use the word “hella” as an intensifier and Southern Californians like to use a definite article, “the”, in front of freeway names.

California is one of the most influential places in the US and around the world, so it is good to know about its culture. On its own, California has the sixth largest economy in the world, which is very impressive considering that California is only a state within American borders. With a huge film industry that is many decades old, California and Hollywood have been projecting their culture across the world since the early 20th Century. These are some of the reasons why California continues to be a popular cultural icon and tourist destination for many people around the world.
